Ryan Engelbrecht came into this world on November 24, 1981. He had a love for music since he was able to walk. As a 3 year old he would put a ruler on his turned over red wagon. The handle of the red wagon was the piano foot pedal and the ruler was the keyboard. We wanted to nurture his passion for music and soon after that he had a child size keyboard.
At age 7 Ryan was diagnosed with Tourettes Syndrome. Through the next few years the Tourettes became pronounced as this interfered with his ability to function properly. Also at this same time he developed a stammer that continues to this day.
It was not until Ryan’s high school years that we noticed some inability for him to relate to others. After some research and some time we found that he had the symptoms of Aspergers Syndrome. His symptoms are not severe but they do interfere with his ability to interact. While he was at Houghton College studying Music we gave him a book on Aspergers Syndrome. This book, he said, helped to explain what he was feeling and experiencing.
Today, at age 26, Ryan is pursuing his music passion. The symptoms of the Tourettes Syndrome have largely disappeared but the stammer continues. He says God is going to help him get rid of this. It also appears that the Asperger symptoms that he struggles with are being overcome by his tenacity to work through the symptoms.
